FOR THE MUSIC: Staff’s Choice: Freddie’s Fab Five

Fred (Metropolis) doesn’t really need an introduction, but for those who don’t know, he is part of the For The Record Ibiza vinyl team. Their extensive used vinyl catalogue, which covers most genres of the dance music spectrum, has been obtained through recycling DJs’ and vinyl collectors’ complete and part collections through their Discogs store.

Fred has been heavily involved in the dance music distribution network for over twenty years.

In 1990, he was a freelance record distributor in London and worked for several independent companies, including Network Records, Greyhound, Ideal, Pinnacle, Kudos and Sub Level.

In 1997, he formed his own distribution company, Metropolis Record Distribution, and in 2000, he created a sister company, GMT Audio Productions, for which he managed production and worldwide distribution for independent dance music labels, including Mixed Blood, Scandinavia, Optional Extras, Matrix, and Specialist Interests.

During his Metropolis years, Fred built his reputation as one of London’s leading dance music distributors for vinyl. His passion and ear for good underground dance music, alongside his determination, got many of today’s underground dance music classics, such as Knights Of The Jaguar, Bug in The Bassbin, Galaxy to Galaxy, Circus Bells, and Minimal Nation, amongst many others, into the record shops, into DJs’ record bags, and onto the dance floors.

Today Fred gives us his top five picks from the shop….

Tranquility Bass, aka Michael Adam Kandel was an American musician from Chicago, whose music spanned ambient housetrip hop, and funk rock. He released various singles during the ‘90s, and this was his first full-length album, released in ‘97 on Astralwerks.

The Aretha re-edit, for a long time after it’s release in 2002, you couldn’t go to a festival without hearing it. Danny Krivit can’t claim all of the credit here: this is essentially a re-arrangement of Sure Is Pure’s 1994 official remix of Aretha’s 1971 groover, with Krivit bringing bits of vocal up to the front to give it the unmistakable intro that DJs love, and adding some dubwise flourishes, before letting Sure Is Pure’s funky, chunky, Balearic groove and the full glory of Aretha’s voice loose. Still does the business every time.

Kevin Saunderson, one of the creators of techno, celebrates 20 years of productions, here with the 3rd installment double A side 12” of the Kevin Saunderson history project. A ”Good Life” Mathew Jonson’s Acid Mix. B.”Just Want Another Chance” John Tejada remix. Kevin’s pioneering seductive low end hum went on to feature in techno and drum ‘n’ bass records for much of the next decade and on this re rub west coast techno ambassador John Tejada keeps the original biting low end hook and updates it with melodies set amongst old skool cymbals and driving claps and percussion that echo the sounds of Detroit’s golden days.

A – In June 2006, Autolux was approached by James Lavelle of Unkle to collaborate on his next record. The band was given an acoustic guitar track with a simple drum machine beat. They developed the song, overdubbed various other tracks and vocals in their rehearsal space, and gave the finished piece, “Persons & Machinery”, back to Unkle to arrange and mix. It was included on Unkle’s album War Stories, released in July 2007. Goreshter also played bass guitar on a few of the other tracks on the record. On April 30, 2007, Unkle released a limited edition remix 12″ called Surrender Sounds Session Session #3 & #4, with the A-side containing a remix of the Autolux track “Turnstile Blues” from Future Perfect.

I first heard Look Into Your Eyes when Ricardo played it on the terrace of DC10 in 2009, and still, it never fails to reignite a crowd – The vocals were sampled from Loleatta Holloway – Dreamin’ (I think).
