FOR THE MUSIC: Staff’s Choice – Vick’s Picks

I’ll start by saying I am not a DJ. But what I am is a dance floor enthusiast, a punter if you will. I like to dance to good music and I buy and collect records that do it for me.

Having trawled through For The Record’s amazing collections, I have picked out five records I would love to hear on the dance floor.

Alison Moyet – Hoodoo (Starlight dub) – A2

Perfect for getting things started is this hypnotic 98 bpm dub record, a hard to get hold of remix by Francois K  – *also sounds ace played at 45!

Eve Gallagher – Love Come Down (Psychedelic Sanyasin’s Dub) – B2

The perfect 5am tune! This is a great slow psychedelic mix by Dave Morales from 1990, still sounding fresh. Would put any weary dancer’s head back in the game!

Readymade – Obsession – A3

Another from 1990, and a project by Thomas Fehlmann (The Orb) “Obsession” is a trippy house track sampling Robert Owens voice from Tears, with a killer bassline.

How II House – Time To Feel The Rhythm (Def Party Mix) – A1

The first record Toronto’s Ron Allen ever made – an absolute banger on Bigshot Records, who had some great releases over the earlier days. Straight for the jugular, pure essence of rave from ’89, it was ahead of the game then, and still sounds ace today, would love to hear this out!

I Don’t Even Know If I Should Call You Baby (Marshall Jefferson Symphony) – A1

In 1989, after being introduced to Chicago house, Johnny Male teamed up with Guy Batson and Jhelisa Anderson to begin the project Soul Family Sensation. Masterfully mixed by Marshall Jefferson, his signature production style shines through, weaving together intricate layers of instrumentation to create the perfect end of the night record..
